Competitive Team FAQ

Who coaches the competitive team at Galaxy Gymnastics?

Our competitive programs are led by Kristen Maloney, an Olympic Bronze Medalist and former USA Gymnastics national team member. Kristen's world-class experience shapes every athlete's development — from Pre-Team all the way through the Developmental program.

How does my child get invited to the team?

All competitive programs at Galaxy are invite-only. Our coaching staff evaluates athletes based on skill level, physical readiness, attitude, and dedication. If you'd like to request an evaluation, call us at (410) 572-4992 or contact us online.

What is the difference between XCEL and Developmental?

XCEL is a USA Gymnastics competitive program with a lower time commitment — 2 to 3 days per week. It's ideal for athletes who want real competition experience with schedule flexibility. Developmental is the traditional Junior Olympic track (Levels 2–9), with up to 4 days per week and more hours on the floor. It's for athletes pursuing a serious competitive gymnastics career long-term.

What XCEL levels does Galaxy offer?

Galaxy Gymnastics offers XCEL Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. All XCEL athletes must hold a current USA Gymnastics membership to compete.

What are the practice commitments for each program?

Pre-Team: 2 days/week · 1.5 hours per session. XCEL: 2–3 days/week · 2.5–3.5 hours per session. Developmental: 2–4 days/week · 2–4 hours per session depending on level.
